Xiamen University

Xiamen University (XMU) was founded in 1921 by Kah Kee TAN, a well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader. It was the first university in China founded by an overseas Chinese. At present it is one of China's prestigious universities and the only university in five special economic zones which is included in the 211 Project and the 985 Project, projects which aim to found world-class universities in the twenty first century under the auspices of the central government of china.
Over the past 88 years, by following the motto: Pursue Excellence, Strive for Perfection, XMU has accumulated rich experience in academic endeavors. Equipped with a strong team of faculty and staff who provide a complete range of education programs, XMU has become a first-class comprehensive university in China with extensive international influence. Since its founding, XMU has produced more than 150,000 undergraduates and graduates for the country. Over sixty academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering have studied or worked at XMU. Lots of great scholars have studied or worked here-- Professor WANG Yanan , a former president of the University, translated Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and Karl Marx's Das Kapital into Chinese; Professor Lu Jiaxi, a famous chemist who studied in XMU during 1930-1934, was the president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences during 1981-1988 ; XIE Xide, a notable physicist who graduated from XMU in 1946, was the president of Fudan University during 1983-1988; CHEN Jingrun, who proved Goldbachs Conjecture in Mathematics, graduated in 1953 from XMU; LIN Yutang, a famous writer, was the dean of the School of Art during 1926-1927.
XMU has twenty two schools containing sixty departments. The university offers 79 undergraduate programs, 219 graduate programs, and 134 PhD programs, including fourteen Doctoral and seventeen Master degree programs in the national key disciplines. There are fifteen post doctoral research centers, nine subjects of national educational centers for talents, eleven subjects listed among the state key disciplines in the "211 Project during the period of the tenth Five-year plan and eleven subjects listed among the innovation research bases in the second phase of the 985 Project.
XMU has an excellent team of faculty and staff including 2,337 full-time faculty and professional researchers. Among them, there are 1319 professors and associate professors, and twenty are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Moreover, seven faculty members of XMU are seated on the State Council's Academic Degree Appraisal Committee, twelve have been listed in the "One-hundred plus One-thousand plus Ten-thousand Talent Project, sixty eight have been included in the Ministry of Education's training program for the "Leading Figures for the New Century", twenty two have obtained the "Grant for National Outstanding Youth" from the National Science Foundation. There are twenty one special and nine lecture professorships of Yangtze Scholar, two National Innovation Research Teams and three Ministry of Education Innovation Groups.
The university now has a total enrollment of over 36,000 full-time students on campus, including 20,824 undergraduates, 13,349 master students, 2,237 doctoral students, and over 2000 international students. In 2005, XMU received a straight-A score in the undergraduate level Teaching Appraisal organized by the Ministry of Education.
XMU has set up over 130 research institutions, including two State Key Laboratories, one State Engineering Research Center, five Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Education, and five state key research bases in humanities and social sciences.
Two scientific research findings won the Second Class Prize of the National Natural Science Award in 2006. Five research reports were published in the international journal Science and Nature from 2004 to 2006. XMU also has strong potential in human and social science research. Taiwan studies, Southeast Asian studies, economics, and accounting are at the highest tier among domestic universities.
XMU has inter-university cooperative ties with over one hundred institutions of higher education at home and abroad. Because of its especially favorable geographical location and advantageous human resources, it is the key university most actively engaged in cross-straits educational, scientific and cultural exchanges between mainland China and Taiwan.
At present, XMUs three campuses cover over 524.5 hectares. With green hills behind and the sea in front, XMU is recognized as one of the most beautiful universities in China. XMU has a constructed area of 1.35 million square meters and its libraries hold 4.60 million volumes (including 1.5 million electronic volumes). The scope and level of its high-speed information network on campus is rated at the top of all universities in China and has become one of the main injunctions of CERNET2 , one of the network backbones of Chinas Next Generation Internet project.
XMU is now making great strides towards its goal of "building a high-level university well-known both at home and abroad."
